Just where do you Start Landscaping when you have a Big, Unkempt, Backyard
If you have bought a home because you just loved its big backyard then you are in for an
incredible adventure! It is especially true if the yard has not been maintained properly for a
long time. It means that a lot of work is needed to be done to make it usable.
Backyard landscaping is a big project that requires close collaboration between you (the
homeowner) and the contractor you have hired. It is about making a lot of decisions, big
and small.
Start with a vision and plan on a piece of paper. Decide which plants and physical
structures you want to keep. Clean up any dead trees, stumps and bushes. Then figure out
where you want the lawn to be. Lawns consume a lot of water, so if you want to reduce
water consumption then keep the lawn small and/or create concrete or brick pathway
along the edge. Pathways are great for kids who like to scooter and bike or for your
morning walks!
The other big decision to make is whether you would like a swimming pool or not. If you
decide you don’t want a pool then would you like to have your own kitchen garden? If yes,
then consider leaving some space for raised beds.
Wood structures such as gazebos are a great addition to your backyard. If made in the right
location, they can make your backyard look absolutely beautiful. Consider planting some
vines that hang over gazebos. They look stunning.
If you have financial constraints, then divide the project into small parts and do one part at
a time. It is a fun and rewarding experience to be able to transform a useless yard into a
fully functional one!
